Eid Mubarak 2026: A Warm Day with Indo Idaho

Eid has a special way of bringing people back to what truly matters are connection, warmth, and a sense of home. Even thousands of miles away from Indonesia, the Indo Idaho community in Boise gathered to celebrate Eid Mubarak 2026 in the most heartfelt way: together.

Opening: A Meaningful Start

The event started simply, but meaningfully. Kak Cecilia opened the gathering with warm and welcoming words that instantly made everyone feel at ease. Soon after, Kak Anton led a prayer, and the room grew quiet as everyone took a moment to reflect and embrace the spirit of Eid.

One of the most touching moments came when late Kak Novi's husband thanked the Indo Idaho community for being there for her, supporting and strengthening her through one of the hardest times in her life. It was a reminder that this community is more than just a group, it’s a place where people truly care for one another.

Meeting New People, Reconnecting Again

After the opening, the atmosphere became lighter as new members were introduced. There were smiles, small laughs, and a lot of “nice to meet you” moments.

At the same time, it was also a chance for long-time members to reconnect. Conversations flowed naturally, as if no time had passed. It didn’t feel formal, it felt like meeting old friends and welcoming new ones into the same circle. Kak Anton also shared angpao to the children!

Food, Stories, and a Taste of Home

Then came one of the best parts, food. Everyone gathered around tables filled with Indonesian dishes, each one bringing a sense of familiarity and comfort.

People didn’t just eat, they shared. They talked, laughed, and told stories in between bites. In that moment, it didn’t feel like being far from home anymore. The food, the language, and the people made everything feel close again.

Tug of War: Fun, Laughter, and Snacks

Things got even more exciting during the tug-of-war game. Teams were formed, and suddenly the space was filled with cheers, laughter, and playful competition.

What made it even more fun were the prizes; Indomie, Ultra Milk, and other Indonesian snacks that everyone loves. It wasn’t really about winning or losing; it was about the energy, the laughter, and the shared joy of doing something simple together.

A Moment of Reminder

As the event came to an end, there was a calm and happy feeling in the air. It wasn’t just another gathering, it was a day full of connection, support, and genuine togetherness.

Eid Mubarak 2026 with Indo Idaho was a reminder that “home” isn’t always a place, it’s the people you share moments with. And on that day in Boise, everyone found a little piece of home in each other. ��

International Women’s Day Celebration with Tanta, Inc.

On March 7, our community gathered at Potomac Manor for a meaningful and joyful International Women’s Day Celebration hosted by Tanta, Inc. The evening brought together people from many cultures to honor women, celebrate their contributions, and share the beauty of traditions from around the world.

From the moment guests arrived, the room was filled with warmth and excitement. Conversations flowed easily as friends greeted one another and new connections were made. The event reminded everyone that International Women’s Day is not only about recognition, but also about appreciation, unity, and support for the women who shape our families and communities.

Celebrating Culture Through Dance

One of the highlights of the evening was the cultural performances. Indo Idaho proudly presented two traditional Indonesian dances: Pendet and Merak.

The Pendet dance opened the performance with its graceful movements and welcoming spirit. Traditionally performed as a dance of offering, it beautifully symbolized respect and gratitude. The dancers moved gently across the stage, creating a calm and elegant atmosphere that captivated the audience.

Following that, the Merak dance brought a burst of color and energy. Inspired by the beauty of peacocks, the dancers wore vibrant costumes and performed expressive movements that represented elegance and confidence. The audience watched with admiration as Indonesian culture was shared through music, movement, and storytelling.

A Night of Global Culture

Beyond the performances, the event truly reflected international friendship. Guests enjoyed a variety of dances from different cultures, each bringing its own rhythm, costume, and story. The stage became a space where traditions from around the world were shared and celebrated together.

Food also played a special role in the evening. Tables were filled with international dishes that allowed guests to taste flavors from different countries. Sharing food, laughter, and stories made the night feel welcoming and vibrant.

Honoring Women in Our Community

The International Women’s Day celebration at Potomac Manor was more than just an event. It was a reminder of how powerful it can be when communities come together to celebrate women, culture, and diversity. One of the most memorable highlights of the evening was when Kak Arin received the Tanta of the Year Award 2026 .

From the graceful Indonesian dances to the recognition of inspiring women, from the colorful performances to the shared meals, the evening was filled with gratitude and joy.

As the event came to an end, guests left with smiles, new friendships, and a deeper appreciation for the strength and beauty of women across cultures. It was a night that truly honored the spirit of International Women’s Day.

Lunar New Year 2026 Celebration

On February 21, 2026, we gathered at Panda Garden Chinese & Japanese Restaurant to celebrate Lunar New Year with warmth, laughter, and togetherness. It was more than just a dinner. It was a reunion of families, friends, and community members who came together to welcome a new year filled with hope and blessings.

From the moment everyone arrived, the atmosphere felt joyful and vibrant. Red decorations symbolizing luck and prosperity added a festive touch to the restaurant. Families greeted one another with smiles, children ran excitedly between tables, and conversations flowed easily. For many of us, this celebration was not only about tradition, but also about reconnecting.

Sharing a Meal, Sharing Stories

We enjoyed a delicious spread of Chinese dishes together. Plates of warm fried rice, noodles, stir-fried vegetables, seafood, and savory meats filled the tables. Sharing food has always been at the heart of Lunar New Year, and that evening reminded us why.

As we passed dishes around, we also shared stories from the past year. We talked about growth, challenges, achievements, and dreams for the months ahead. There is something powerful about sitting around one table, tasting the same food, and feeling that sense of belonging.

The Joy of Angpao for the Children

One of the most heartwarming moments of the evening was the angpao sharing for the children. As the kids lined up with excitement and curiosity, their eyes sparkled with anticipation. The simple red envelopes, filled with blessings and good wishes, brought so much happiness.

It was not about the amount inside the envelope. It was about the meaning behind it. Angpao represents good fortune, protection, and hopes for a bright future. Watching the children smile and thank the elders reminded us that traditions live on through the younger generation.

A Celebration of Togetherness

Lunar New Year is a time to renew hope, strengthen family bonds, and begin again with gratitude. Our gathering at Panda Garden reflected all of that.

We left the restaurant that night feeling full not only from the delicious food, but also from meaningful conversations and shared laughter. The celebration reminded us that community is built through moments like this. Sitting together, blessing one another, and welcoming the year ahead with open hearts.

2025: A Year We Will Always Remember

As we look back on 2025, our hearts feel full. This year was not just about organizing events or filling calendars. It was about people. It was about connection. It was about creating spaces where culture, faith, family, and friendship could grow together.

Every gathering, every rehearsal, every meeting, and every shared meal became part of a bigger story. A story of a community that continues to show up for one another

Bahasa Indonesia Class Program

Throughout the year, our Bahasa Indonesia classes became a place of growth and belonging. From regular classes and the June session to field trips, blog projects, and our Earth Day activity, students experienced more than language lessons.

They explored their roots. They built confidence. They learned that language carries stories and identity. Seeing students speak, laugh, and connect through Bahasa Indonesia reminded us why this program matters so much.

Happy Lunar New Year 2025

We stepped into Lunar New Year 2026 surrounded by warmth and laughter. There is something special about celebrating the end and beginning of a year as a community.

We reflected on how far we have come, prayed for what lies ahead, and shared simple but meaningful moments. When the countdown reached zero, we were not just entering a new year. We were entering it together.

Culture & Heritage Exhibitions: Sharing Who We Are

Indonesian Cultural and Heritage Day and Blossom Together at the Idaho State Museum were moments of pride.

We wore traditional clothing, shared performances, and introduced Indonesian culture to the wider community. These events were not only about showcasing traditions. They were about honoring our history and sharing it with open hearts.

Religious and Cultural Holidays: Faith and Reflection

Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Ceng Beng, and Eid al-Adha 2025 reminded us of the beauty of faith and remembrance.

We gathered in reflection, gratitude, and generosity. Each tradition carried values of compassion and community. These celebrations brought comfort and strengthened our bonds.

AAPI and Cultural Diversity Celebrations

Through the AAPI Celebration, World Village Festival, and Day of Dance, we stood proudly among many cultures.

We danced, performed, and shared our heritage with others. In those moments, we were reminded that diversity is a gift. Being part of a multicultural community enriches us all.

Family and Community Events: The Joy of Being Together

From the Tanta Family Picnic to Father’s Day and Art Rave, we experienced simple but meaningful joy.

Children played, families connected, and creativity flowed. These gatherings may not always be formal or grand, but they are the heart of our community. They remind us that belonging often grows in small, shared moments.

 National Celebrations: Honoring Two Homes

Celebrating Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day and the Fourth of July gave us space to honor both our heritage and the country we live in.

We celebrated freedom, resilience, and gratitude. We are proud of our roots and thankful for the opportunities around us. Holding both identities is something we cherish.

Sports Event: Indo Idaho Badminton Tournament

Our Badminton Tournament brought energy, laughter, and friendly competition. Beyond the games and scores, what mattered most was the togetherness. We cheered for one another, encouraged one another, and strengthened friendships.

 Creative and Literary Project: Echoes of the Soul

Echoes of the Soul became a space for reflection and expression. Through writing and creativity, voices were heard. Stories were shared. Emotions found words. This project reminded us that art can connect hearts in powerful ways.

Grateful for Every Step

2025 required effort, teamwork, patience, and commitment. It required volunteers who stayed late, families who showed up, and leaders who carried responsibility with care.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who made this year possible. Every participant, every supporter, every volunteer, and every friend played a role in shaping this journey.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

The event began with a warm opening, setting a festive and welcoming tone for the afternoon. This was followed by a prayer and a Bible reading, giving everyone a moment to reflect on the spirit of Christmas and the values of love, hope, and kindness.

Performances That Touched the Heart

One of the highlights of the celebration was the series of beautiful performances by our talented community members. Each performance brought its own charm and emotion:

Alena opened with a graceful violin performance
Adam followed with a trumpet performance that filled the room with holiday spirit
Kak Sherly and Joshua led a touching prayer accompanied by piano and violin
Caleb performed a piano sonatina with great focus and confidence
Alexa impressed the audience by playing the violin and singing a song
Liam closed the performance session with a piano performance

Every piece was met with warm applause and appreciation. It was inspiring to see so many talents shared so generously.

Games, Gifts, and Santa

After the performances, the celebration continued with games and laughter. The room lit up when Santa Claus arrived, bringing smiles to both kids and adults. Everyone had the chance to take photos with Santa and received Christmas gifts, making the moment extra special.

Indo Idaho Brings Indonesia to Day of Dance 3

On September 20, 2025, Geiser Pollman Park was filled with music, color, and joy for Day of Dance 3 , a celebration of National Dance Day hosted by Crossroads Carnegie Art Center. Dozens of groups shared their traditions, and at noon, Indo Idaho took the stage to showcase the heart of Indonesia through dance.

The performance began with the graceful Merak Dance , where dancers shimmered like peacocks spreading their wings.

Laughter and energy followed with the Yapong Dance , its playful rhythm lighting up the crowd.

From Kalimantan, the powerful Dayak Dance honored the strength of Indonesia’s indigenous heritage.

Finally, everyone joined in the lively Poco Poco , turning the park into one big family dance floor.

For Indo Idaho, this wasn’t just about performing; it was about connecting. Each dance carried a piece of Indonesia’s story, and the audience responded with curiosity, applause, and even their own dance steps.

Day of Dance 3 reminded us how culture brings people together. Indo Idaho left the stage with hearts full, grateful to share Indonesia’s beauty with the Idaho community.

The World Village Festival 2025, hosted by Global Lounge at JUMP!, kicked off in the best way possible with stories, food, and the warmth of community. And this year, Indonesia was right at the heart of it all.

Stories That Stay With You

One of the most moving moments of the day was meeting Brian Kimmel, author of Blue Skies, Troubled Waters. He shared the powerful true story of twin sisters who grew up in New Jersey, were suddenly deported to Indonesia, and later imprisoned during the Japanese invasion. Listening to him talk about their journey wasn’t just about history, it was about resilience, family, and the way stories connect us across time and cultures.

People didn’t just sit and listen. They asked questions, reflected, and connected with Brian directly. It felt less like a lecture and more like a shared conversation.

Food That Feels Like Home

Of course, no celebration is complete without food. The smell of spices filled the air as Bude Tanti showed everyone how to make two Indonesian favorites: Rendang (tender beef slow-cooked in rich spices) and Corn Fritters (crispy, savory, and absolutely addictive). Here to find the recipes.

Rendang & Crispy Corn Fritters Recipes

When we talk about Indonesian food, it’s not just about taste — it’s about tradition, family, and the joy of sharing meals together. Two dishes that always bring people to the table are the famous Rendang and the beloved snack Dadar Jagung (Crispy Corn Fritters).

Here’s how you can make both at home.

�� Rendang

This recipe, originally shared by Cookpad user ihdanas , uses the method of sautéing the ground spices first for a richer, more fragrant flavor.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

1 kg beef, cut into pieces
2 liters coconut milk (from 2.5 grated coconuts)

Ground Spices

125 g shallots
125 g curly red chili
10 cloves garlic
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
1.5 tbsp coriander
1 tsp pepper

Whole Spices

4 bay leaves
2 turmeric leaves
2 star anise
4 cardamoms
1 cinnamon stick
5 cloves
5 cm galangal (bruised)
3 lemongrass stalks (bruised)

Seasoning

Palm sugar (to taste)
Salt (to taste)
Powdered broth (optional, to taste)

Instructions

Blend all ground spices until smooth, then sauté until fragrant.
Add the beef and stir until coated with the spices.
Add bay leaves, galangal, lemongrass, turmeric leaves, star anise, cloves, and cinnamon. Stir well.
Pour in the coconut milk slowly while stirring. Season with salt and palm sugar.
Use the on-off cooking method : cook for 30 minutes, rest 30 minutes, cook 10 minutes, rest again, and repeat until the beef is tender.
Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens, oil separates, and the beef becomes dark and rich.

�� Serve with rice, fresh vegetables, and sambal ijo (green chili sambal).

�� Crispy Corn Fritters (Dadar Jagung)

This recipe, adapted from Ismy Maulidasary, is a favorite snack in Indonesia — crunchy on the outside, soft and flavorful inside.

Ingredients

2 medium-sized sweet corn cobs
2 scoops all-purpose flour
1/2 tbsp rice flour
1 tbsp powdered broth
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp pepper powder
1 scallion, sliced
1 celery leaf, sliced
1 tbsp margarine
120 ml water (adjust as needed)

Instructions

Remove the kernels from the corn cobs.
Mix the corn with scallion, celery, seasonings, and both types of flour. Stir well.
Add water and margarine, then stir again until you get a smooth, thick batter.
Heat oil over medium flame. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the pan and fry until golden brown.
Remove from oil, drain, and serve warm.

Indonesian Badminton Tournament and

Indonesian Cultural and Heritage Day

On Saturday, August 23, 2025 , the Indo-Idaho community came together at the Fort Boise Community Center to celebrate a truly special occasion: Indonesian Cultural and Heritage Day. This year’s event held extra meaning as Indonesia celebrates its 80th Independence Anniversary on August 17th. Inspired by the traditions of Indonesia’s Independence Day, the day was filled with energy, laughter, and a beautiful spirit of togetherness. From spirited sports competitions to delicious Indonesian cuisine and vibrant cultural showcases, the celebration reflected the heart of Indonesia while bringing people across Idaho together in one joyful, memorable event.

Badminton Tournament: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

The day kicked off with an exciting badminton tournament. From powerful smashes to friendly rallies, every match brought cheers and smiles. Players of all levels came together not just to compete, but to enjoy the game that has long been a favorite sport in Indonesia.

It was truly heartwarming to see everyone supporting one another, and most importantly, having fun!

Indonesian Cultural and Heritage Day

After the tournament, the celebration continued with the highlight of the day: Indonesian Cultural and Heritage Day . The afternoon was brought to life with a series of vibrant performances showcasing the beauty and diversity of Indonesian culture. The audience was captivated by the rhythmic Tari Saman from Aceh, followed by the exciting debut of Tari Flying High from Dayak, and the graceful Tari Tempurung from Sumatra.

The performances closed with an interactive Angklung session, where everyone was invited to participate and experience the joy of creating music together. From there, guests gathered to share delicious Indonesian food and drinks , enjoying flavors that reminded many of home while introducing others to new culinary traditions.

To wrap up the evening, laughter and cheers echoed through the community center during the classic balap karung (potato sack race). Both children and adults hopped to the finish line, ending the night with joy and smiles all around—a true reflection of the togetherness that the Indo-Idaho community strives to celebrate each year.

Get ready to smash, rally, and cheer — the Indo Idaho Badminton Tournament is back! ��

As part of the Indonesian Cultural and Heritage Day celebration, this annual event isn’t just about sport; it’s a celebration of community, culture, and the games Indonesians love to play during Independence Day festivities. Alongside music, mouthwatering cuisine, and lively performances, badminton always steals the spotlight.

Last year, the competition was incredible, and we congratulate our 2024 champions for their outstanding performance. Where the First place : Anton Wiranata and YH, Second place : Matt Lee and Sandeep Kukunuri & Third place : Don Loh and Bharath Sepuri��

21 points per game, with dues up to 25

Competition System

4 Groups (A, B, C, D)
4 pairs per group (random draw)
Best 2 from each group advance to elimination rounds

In the event of a tie:

The team with the least losing sets advances.
If still tied, the team with the most winning points advances.

Indonesian Reflection on America's Independence Day

Every summer, as the weather warms and the sky fills with the sound of fireworks, people across the United States gather to celebrate the Fourth of July. For Americans, it’s a special day that marks the country’s independence. But for us, Indonesians living in the U.S., it’s also a chance to pause and reflect.

Whether we are here as students, professionals, families, or part of the Indonesian diaspora, the Fourth of July often brings a mix of feelings. While it may not be our national holiday, it’s one we’ve come to experience and appreciate in our way.

What the Fourth Means to Us

Back home in Indonesia, our Independence Day falls on August 17. It’s filled with familiar traditions, like flag ceremonies, school parades, neighborhood competitions, and community clean-up events. There’s a sense of fun, but also of shared pride in our history.

Here in the U.S., the Fourth of July feels different, but somehow still familiar. We’ve learned to enjoy:

Fireworks displays that light up the night
Backyard barbecues with friends and neighbors
Parades that bring people together in small towns and big cities
The simple joy of being outside in the summer with people you care about

Some of us even bring a little taste of Indonesia with us. Maybe it’s satay sizzling on the grill next to burgers, or a potluck dish with flavors from home. Sometimes, we bring batik to the picnic or teach our new friends how to say “Merdeka!” with a smile.

For many of us, the Fourth of July is more than just a celebration with food and fireworks. It’s a reminder of the freedom we’ve come to value, not just the political kind, but the freedom to study, to work, to build a life in a new place, and to be ourselves.

It also reminds us how powerful diversity can be. At Fourth of July gatherings, it’s not unusual to see people from all backgrounds coming together. That spirit of inclusion, even in small moments, makes us feel welcomed and seen.

Living Between Two Cultures

Living in the U.S. as Indonesians means we carry two cultures in our hearts. We celebrate the Fourth of July with our American friends, while still looking forward to August 17, when we wave the red and white flag and remember where we come from.

Both days matter to us. They remind us that identity is not about choosing one place over another. It’s about honoring all the stories that shape us.

✨ Father’s Day Weekend Recap✨

We had such a heartwarming Father’s Day weekend, filled with music, culture, community, and connection. Here’s a look back at everything we enjoyed together.

�� Saturday: Community Arts Rave

Saturday afternoon at the Boise Depot was buzzing with excitement as we gathered for our Community Arts Rave. The event kicked off with a wonderful solo performance by the talented 14-year-old Lily_Bea_Music. Next, Indo Idaho provided opportunities for angklung and gambang workshops, where attendees of all ages joined in to explore traditional Indonesian instruments. The joy on everyone’s faces as they played together made it one of the highlights of the day.

We also welcomed a special guest, the Sharetea mascot! Sharetea surprised us with their limited edition winter melon tea, which quickly became a crowd favorite. Outside, the kids enjoyed rounds of casual badminton that turned into an afternoon full of friendly competition and laughter. Meanwhile, music lovers wandered through instrument exploration stations and participated in interactive activities that brought rhythm and movement to life.

The performances were a standout. Our talented Indo Idaho members from Distant Wind and Starrhart Symphoni shared beautiful music that had the whole audience engaged. Then came a truly memorable moment: local artist Kendra Kae performed a song in Indonesian, drawing cheers and admiration from the crowd. As the afternoon wrapped up, many of us took a walk up to the top of the Boise Depot tower, always a favorite for the view and photo ops.

�� Sunday: Tanta Father’s Day Picnic

Sunday afternoon brought a more relaxed but equally joyful vibe with the Tanta Father’s Day Picnic. We welcomed around 200–250 people for an afternoon of great food, games, and heartfelt connection. Families lined up for juicy chicken, lamb, and beef burgers grilled by our amazing community cooks, while kids rushed toward the bouncy houses that kept them entertained for hours.

What made the picnic extra special was the genuine sense of togetherness. People shared meals, stories, and laughter while Indo Idaho volunteers helped serve food, assisted families, and cleaned up the park afterward, showing just how much this community cares for one another.

The weekend was a beautiful celebration of fatherhood, friendship, and our shared culture. Thank you to everyone who joined, contributed, and made both events so meaningful. We can’t wait to see you again soon, especially at Indonesian Cultural & Heritage Day on August 23rd!

Bahasa Indonesia Class Recap - June 14

We started our Saturday morning on June 14th with another lively Bahasa Indonesia class! The session opened with a quick review of everything we’ve learned so far, from greetings to basic conversations, giving everyone a chance to refresh their skills and feel more confident.

Next, we moved on to a new topic: telling time in Indonesian. It was great to see everyone actively trying out new vocabulary and practicing how to ask and answer questions about the time.

To make the day even more exciting, we had a mini practice of Tari Tempurung, or the Coconut Shell Dance! It was a fun way to get moving, learn about traditional Indonesian culture, and work together as a group. Check the video at this link .

We wrapped up the class with the first round of planning for our upcoming skit drama, which we’ll be performing at the Indonesian Cultural & Heritage Day on August 23rd. The ideas are flowing, and we can’t wait to bring them to life!

First Eid AL-Adha in Malang!

Hi I'm Meylisa! This year’s Eid al-Adha felt different for me. Far from the familiar warmth of home in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, I found myself celebrating in Malang, where I now attend university. For the first time, I marked this sacred day alone, without my family—but not without community.

I woke up at 4:30 AM, got dressed in my best clothes, and made my way to the Brawijaya University field for the Eid prayer at 6:00 AM. As the sun rose over the campus, I was struck by how united everyone was—students, staff, and the public, all gathered in reverence. Even public institutions like the university played a part in the celebration. It reminded me that Eid al-Adha transcends place—it lives in the spirit of those who gather to honor it.

�� What is Eid al-Adha?

Also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha is one of the two most important Islamic holidays, commemorating the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his unwavering devotion to God. According to Islamic tradition, Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience, only to have God replace his son with a ram, recognizing Ibrahim’s faith.

Muslims around the world mark this day through:

Eid prayers, performed in open fields or mosques
The ritual sacrifice (qurban) of livestock—usually goats, sheep, or cows—with the meat distributed to those in need
Sharing meals and gathering with family and community
Reflecting on values of submission, compassion, and charity

It’s a powerful reminder that true faith is not only about ritual, but about empathy, generosity, and trust in a higher purpose.

�� From Malang to Boise: Celebrating Across Continents

Even as I stood in Malang, I thought about Muslim communities around the world—including in Boise, Idaho, where many refugee and immigrant families gather at the Boise Islamic Center to celebrate Eid al-Adha.

There, the day begins with prayer, just like here. Families dress in their best, greet one another with “Eid Mubarak,” and share food and laughter. What makes Boise’s Eid celebrations special is the sense of unity across cultures—Muslims from Somalia, Iraq, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and more come together as one ummah (community). A Celebration That Connects Us All

I wasn't that lonely, I got a friend, Kania, who accompanied me throughout the day! Though I missed my family this year, Eid al-Adha still brought me closer to something greater to a new local community of faith, sacrifice, and love. From a university field in Malang to a mosque in Boise, the essence of Eid lives on in every kind act, every prayer, every shared plate.

Every May, Mother’s Day arrives as a beautiful reminder to honor the women who nurtured, guided, and loved us unconditionally. While Mother’s Day in the U.S. and Hari Ibu in Indonesia both celebrate maternal love, they differ in timing, tradition, and cultural meaning, each shaped by unique histories and values.

At Indo Idaho, where cultures blend and bloom, we’re reflecting on how both countries express appreciation for mothers and how we can celebrate them in a way that honors both heritages.

Mother’s Day in the United States

In the United States, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. It’s a widely observed holiday rooted in the early 20th century, popularized by Anna Jarvis who advocated for a national day to honor mothers.

The celebration is typically marked by:

Flowers, cards, and gifts as tokens of appreciation
Family gatherings or brunches to spend quality time together
School projects and homemade crafts by children
A focus on personal gratitude and pampering

Many Americans use the day to express their love through small gestures or grand celebrations. It’s a time when restaurants are booked, florists are busy, and families pause to say: “Thank you, Mom.”

Hari Ibu in Indonesia

In Indonesia, Hari Ibu (Mother’s Day) falls on December 22, commemorating the first Indonesian Women’s Congress in 1928, an important moment in the nation’s history when women united to discuss education, rights, and nation-building.

Rather than focusing only on motherhood in the domestic sense, Hari Ibu in Indonesia celebrates women’s empowerment, resilience, and contributions to society whether as mothers, workers, educators, or community leaders.

Typical observances include:

School or community events, such as poetry readings, performances, or ceremonies
Women-led discussions about gender roles and national development
Children or husbands honoring mothers with flowers or small surprises
Media campaigns highlighting the achievements of Indonesian women

It’s a celebration deeply tied to history, social contribution, and national pride, reminding us that honoring a mother is also about honoring her role in the broader community.

National Women Heroes: Honoring Strength Across Cultures

As we reflect on Mother’s Day in the U.S. and Hari Ibu in Indonesia, it’s important to remember the women who paved the way not only as mothers in their families, but as mothers of movements, of change, and of nations.

In the United States, Sojourner Truth stands as a symbol of resilience and justice. Born into slavery in 1797, she escaped to freedom and became a prominent abolitionist, women’s rights advocate, and preacher. Her famous 1851 speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?”, boldly addressed the intersection of race and gender, demanding recognition of Black women’s humanity and strength.

Truth’s legacy reminds us that motherhood and womanhood are not limited to nurturing, but also include the courage to fight for justice and equality qualities that continue to shape the nation’s conscience.

In Indonesia, one of the most honored women figures is R.A. Kartini, a national hero known for her advocacy of women’s education and emancipation during the Dutch colonial era. Born in 1879, Kartini defied societal norms that limited women’s roles and fought to open opportunities for girls to learn, lead, and shape their futures.

Her letters, published as “Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang” (Out of Darkness Comes Light), continue to inspire generations. She represents the powerful message that mothers and women are intellectual, moral, and cultural leaders and their empowerment uplifts the entire nation.

On May 3rd, Indo Idaho had the incredible honor of participating in Blossom Together: AAPI Celebration at the Idaho State Museum. This vibrant gathering brought together communities across Idaho to honor and celebrate the rich and diverse heritages of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) cultures.

With over 800 attendees, the event overflowed with joy, energy, and shared appreciation for cultural expression through music, food, art, and community engagement.

A Taste of Indonesia: Our Food Booth

Visitors to our food booth were treated to Indonesia's bold and comforting flavors. Kak Sufiyah made special homemade dishes, including Nasi uduk/lemak, Rendang, Ayam Goreng, Lodeh, Urap and Telur Balado with sambal terasi and es cincau - that sparked curiosity, conversations, and smiles.

Sharing Culture Through Education: Our Resource Booth

At our resource booth, attendees discovered Indo Idaho’s mission to promote Indonesian culture through music, language education, and meaningful community engagement. Through conversations and shared stories, we highlighted our programs, performances, and the unique traditions that root us in Indonesia and bloom here in Idaho. It was a space of learning, reflection, and cultural exchange.

Gambang Angklung Ensemble: A Sound of Home

One of the most memorable highlights of the evening was the live performance by the Indo Idaho Gambang Angklung Ensemble. With seven traditional musical pieces, our group—featuring both youth and adult musicians from the Indonesian diaspora—filled the museum with the uplifting, resonant tones of bamboo angklung instruments. The performance moved hearts and drew applause, echoing the soulful sounds of Indonesia across the venue.

Celebrating Together with Creative Friends

The celebration was made even more vibrant by the presence of other talented members of the Indonesian and broader AAPI community, including:

Crafty Cats, showcasing beautiful handmade arts and crafts
And many other local artists and entrepreneurs, who brought their creativity, passion, and cultural pride to the day.

Fun Field Trip: Celebrating Earth Day with Bahasa Indonesia Class!

Learning by some Fun and Outdoor Activities

To celebrate Earth Day, our Bahasa Indonesia class took learning outside the classroom—literally! We started the day with a green belt cleaning activity, showing our love for the planet while practicing new Bahasa Indonesia vocabulary. We gathered in the parking area, where the students got their trash bags and learned some important words in Bahasa Indonesia, like:

kantong sampah (trash bag)
tempat sampah (trash can)
pejalan kaki (pedestrian)

It was super fun! The activity includes the participation from all of the students. This is our quality time in the nature.

Then we took a walk along the green belt, collecting litter as we went. The students were not only helping the environment—they were also getting familiar with the world around them in a new language.

But the adventure didn’t stop there. We continued our journey into a nearby forest by the river, picking up more trash bags while soaking in nature’s beauty. It was a perfect mix of service, learning, and exploration.

Surprisingly, kak Rizki found some mushrooms on the dead trees and collected it. She's having fun being a mushroom farmer. In bahasa Indonesia, mushroom is "jamur"��.

Next, we headed to the Boise Farmers Market. The Boise Farmers Market is committed to playing an important role in fostering new ideas in the regional food system. The Farmers Market is a place where the public can learn about the relationship of local food and farms to our health, our economy, and our culture. Back to the Bahasa Indonesia class, each student had a worksheet called "Nama Barang dalam Bahasa Indonesia" (The Goods in Bahasa Indonesia). They started walking around and filled the worksheet.

They interacted with vendors, asked "Berapa harganya?" (How much is it?), and practiced their conversation skills with real-world items.

To wrap up the day, the students and family had a refreshing and fun final activity: supporting local vendor by buying local lemonade! The perfect lemonade for a sunny day.

This field trip was a beautiful blend of environmental awareness, language practice, and cultural immersion. We’re so proud of our young learners for stepping up, speaking out (in Bahasa Indonesia), and making a difference in the community. Terima kasih to all who joined this meaningful day! ��

Faith, Food, and Family: April Celebrations in the Indo Idaho Community

As April begins, the Indonesian community in Idaho finds itself in a unique cultural moment of celebration, remembrance, and togetherness. This year, two meaningful traditions coincide: Lebaran (Eid al-Fitr) on 31st March - 7th April and Cheng Beng (Tomb-Sweeping Day) on 4th April. While these two traditions come from different roots — one Islamic, one Chinese — they both carry a powerful message of honoring family, fostering connection, and returning to what matters most.

Here in Boise, the Indo Idaho community celebrates Lebaran with warmth and joy. Families and friends gather together, bringing homemade dishes that fill the room with the comforting aroma of Indonesian spices — from opor ayam and rendang to ketupat and sambal goreng . Laughter echoes through the hall as people greet each other with " Selamat Idul Fitri, mohon maaf lahir dan batin ." It’s a time to forgive, reconnect, and celebrate the end of Ramadan with gratitude and joy.

At the same time, many Chinese-Indonesian families reflect on Cheng Beng, a tradition that dates back thousands of years. In Indonesia, it is customary for families to visit their ancestors' graves during this season — cleaning the tombstones, offering food, and burning incense in acts of deep respect. Though we may be far from our ancestors’ resting places, the spirit of Cheng Beng lives on in quiet remembrance and prayers across the diaspora in Idaho.

It’s touching to see how in Indonesia, both Eid and Cheng Beng often occur in the same week, and communities celebrate side by side. Muslim friends greet each other with festive clothes and warm meals, while Chinese-Indonesian families make their annual pilgrimage to ancestral graves. There's a mutual understanding — a shared respect for each other’s traditions, even if they differ in form.

In Indo Idaho, we carry that same spirit. We are a small but vibrant community made up of diverse stories of students, professionals, families, and long-time residents. This April, our celebrations remind us that no matter where we are, our roots and our values travel with us. Whether it’s through a bowl of homemade lontong sayur or a silent moment of prayer for those who came before us, we honor the past while embracing the present.

To everyone in our community, Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri and Qingming Jie Kuai Le. May this season bring peace to your heart, warmth to your home, and pride in your heritage.

We at Indo Idaho Inc. are excited to be a part of this vibrant celebration! Join us at our booth, where we’ll be serving up a delicious variety of traditional Indonesian foods . Bacang, Qinming Festival & the Dragon Boat Festival: Chinese Traditions Around the World

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Jie (童母节), is one of China’s traditional festivals, celebrated annually on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This festival is closely associated with the legend of Qu Yuan, a poet and official from the Chu Dynasty who sacrificed himself for his country. As part of the celebrations, Chinese communities worldwide enjoy bacang (zongzi), dragon boat races, and various traditional rituals.

Bacang: A Symbol of Respect and Cultural Heritage

Bacang, or zongzi, is a traditional dish made of glutinous rice filled with ingredients such as meat, beans, or sweet paste, wrapped in bamboo leaves, and then steamed or boiled. According to legend, bacang was originally thrown into the river to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan’s body after he jumped into the Miluo River.

In different countries, bacang has evolved to match local cultures. In China, there are variations between the northern and southern regions. Northern bacang tends to be sweet, filled with red bean paste, while the southern version is often savory, featuring pork, beans, or mushrooms.

Celebrating Qinming Tradition to Remember and Honor the Deceased

Last week, IndoIdaho had Bacang making lesson led by Ahma and Mama Pin Sie at Wiranata's residence. The ladies gently make Bacang and follow the instructions excitingly. Bacang making became a warm moment to share within the community, and let the tradition live.

In fact, Bacang is not only for the Dragon Boats Festival but also for other Chinese festivals, including the Qingming Festival. The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day or Pure Brightness Festival, is a Chinese holiday celebrated on the 15th day after the spring equinox, typically in early April, to honor and remember ancestors. In this festival, people pay respects to their ancestors by visiting graves, sweeping tombs, and offering food and paper money. While the focus is on honoring the deceased, various regional foods are also consumed, including Bacang. This year, Qinming festival will be on 4th April 2025.

Dragon Boat Festival in the United States: Denver, Washington D.C., and Beyond

In the United States, Chinese communities and the general public celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with enthusiasm. Cities like Denver and Washington D.C. serve as key hubs for the festivities, featuring grand dragon boat races.

Denver hosts the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, which not only includes races but also showcases Asian cultural performances and a food festival where different types of bacang are sold.
Washington D.C. hosts the Dragon Boat Festival along the Potomac River. This event attracts participants from various communities, including non-Chinese individuals who want to experience the festive atmosphere.

Dragon Boat Festival in Indonesia: Padang, Jakarta, and Beyond

In Indonesia, Dragon Boat Festival traditions remain strong in Chinese communities, especially in cities with significant Chinese populations.

Padang , which has a long history with the Chinese community, holds international dragon boat races in Banjir Kanal GOR H. Agus Salim, Padang, West Sumatra. Bacang is an essential part of the celebration, often featuring fillings like chicken and peanuts.
Jakarta , particularly in the Glodok and Ancol areas, is a major center for Dragon Boat Festival celebrations. Traditional markets and Chinese restaurants typically offer a variety of bacang during the festival period.

Global Celebrations: Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Other Countries

Beyond the U.S. and Indonesia, the Dragon Boat Festival is widely celebrated in many parts of the world:

Hong Kong is famous for the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, which attract participants from around the globe.

What is it like having Ramadan in the U.S.?

Ramadan is a time of reflection, devotion, and togetherness. For many Muslims, this holy month is deeply intertwined with family traditions and a communal spirit. However, experiencing Ramadan in the United States presents unique challenges, as Kak Aulia has come to understand and share her experience in this blog.

Unlike in Indonesia, where the entire nation embraces the spirit of Ramadan, the atmosphere in the U.S. feels markedly different. With fewer people celebrating, the warmth and collective excitement of the holy month are not as palpable. Being away from family further amplifies this sense of distance, making the experience feel lonelier than what she is accustomed to back home.

To bridge the gap between her current life and her cherished traditions, Kak Aulia finds comfort in cooking. Preparing the same dishes that she would typically have for iftar in Indonesia allows her to maintain a connection to her roots. The familiar flavors bring a sense of home, transforming her dining table into a space of nostalgia and warmth.

Another significant challenge she faces is the extended fasting hours. Compared to Indonesia, where the fasting period is shorter, the long daylight hours in the U.S. can be difficult to endure. However, Kak Aulia has found an effective coping method: staying busy. Keeping herself engaged throughout the day allows time to pass more quickly, making the fasting hours more manageable.

Far from family, doesn't have to be so lonely!

Despite being far from home, Kak Aulia ensures she remains connected to the Muslim community. One of the ways she does this is by attending prayers at the mosque. Sharing the Ramadan experience with fellow Muslims helps keep the spiritual essence of the month alive. The mosque becomes a sanctuary—a place where she can find solace and a sense of belonging.

Through this experience, Kak Aulia has gained a newfound appreciation for Ramadan with family. When surrounded by loved ones, it is easy to take those moments for granted. However, being miles away from them has deepened her gratitude for the times they have spent together. The distance, while challenging, has also served as a reminder of just how precious those shared moments truly are. Another comment about Ramadan from kak Mia. She said,

" I learned to be more patient. There are too many temptations. Especially when you're fasting with a population, mostly non-Muslim, it's a big challenge ".

As she continues to navigate Ramadan in a foreign land, Indonesian muslim people in the U.S. hold onto the traditions that define this sacred month. Through food, community, and personal reflection, she finds ways to keep the spirit of Ramadan alive, no matter where they are.

Ramadan as Inter-island Migrant: You may Experience at a Young Age

The experience of living far from family also experienced by Meylisa and Rafi, college students from East Kalimantan who continue their study in Malang, East Java.

" I can cook (pictured above), I can hang out with my friends for iftar, but I still miss my mom's cooking, " Meylisa said. Her favorite simple dish is soup! It's the solution to have a nutritious food when away from family.

Even though it is not always about food, the moment we have during Ramadan affects the way we enjoy the moment. Meylisa values the moment with whom we spend Ramadan, so she appreciates every moment whenever she has a chance to share the togetherness during Ramadan as an inter-island migrant.

Slightly different than Meylisa, Rafi said " Living far from family broadens my scope on seeing the world. It is an opportunity for me to meet new people who are in the same boat, and create a new family! "

Both their insight about Ramadan helps us to see more about the meaning of Ramadan for Muslims. it is not as simple as a holy month, but it is a month where family reunites or begins.

Indo Idaho's Bahasa Indonesia Class Explores the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial

Last weekend, our Bahasa Indonesia class embarked on an enlightening field trip to the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial in Boise. This immersive experience aimed to deepen our students' understanding of human rights, unity, and compassion while enhancing their Bahasa Indonesia skills through interactive learning.

Starting at the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights

Our day began at the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights, the organization responsible for constructing and maintaining the memorial. Here, two dedicated docents introduced the significance of human rights and the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect. The center's mission to promote respect for human dignity and diversity through education resonated deeply with our objectives.

Following the introduction, we embarked on a guided walk to the life-size bronze statue of Anne Frank. This poignant sculpture depicts Anne pulling back an imaginary curtain, symbolizing her view from the family's attic hiding place in Amsterdam.

Along the way, the tour guide highlighted various quotes etched into the memorial's walls, featuring words from human rights leaders across the globe. Students were encouraged to translate these English quotes into Bahasa Indonesia, fostering both language development and a deeper connection to the messages of hope and resilience.

Exploring the Tunnel: Transforming Hate into Art

One of the most impactful parts of our visit was exploring the nearby tunnel, which had previously been defaced with hateful graffiti. Instead of erasing these marks, the community, lead by Addie Boswell, transformed the space into a canvas for beautiful art, turning symbols of hate into expressions of hope and unity. Her artistic design, titled E. Pluribus Unum or Out of Many, One , was finished with the help of community, including children and also passerbies.

This transformation served as a powerful lesson for our students on how negativity can be converted into positive action.

Throughout the memorial, students engaged in activities designed to enhance their Bahasa Indonesia proficiency. They practiced asking and answering questions about personal information—such as name, address, age, and origin—drawing parallels between their own lives and Anne Frank's story. This contextual learning approach made the language lessons more relatable and impactful.

Reflecting on a Unique Experience

Notably, the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial is the only Anne Frank memorial in the United States, making our visit a unique opportunity to connect with global history on a local level. The memorial not only commemorates Anne Frank's legacy but also catalyzes discussions on human rights and personal responsibility.

This field trip successfully combined cultural education with language learning, providing our students with a holistic educational experience. By exploring the memorial, they not only improved their Bahasa Indonesia skills but also gained a profound understanding of the importance of empathy, unity, and standing up against injustice.

March 8th was a night to remember in Idaho, as over 400 women from 40 different communities gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day in a spectacular event hosted by Tanta.Inc! The evening kicked off at 5 PM with a warm welcoming remark, setting the tone for a night filled with culture, connection, and celebration.

The night was a vibrant display of heritage and diversity, highlighted by a stunning fashion show featuring traditional outfits from Indonesia, presented by IndoIdaho. Our lovely participants graced the stage in exquisite attires representing different Indonesian regions:

Daisy - Bodo Clothes (Sulawesi) Alena - Merak Clothes (Java) Alexa - Kurung Clothes (Sumatra) Charlie & Melisa - Balinese Clothes (Bali) | Abbigail & Cloe - Saman Clothes (Aceh) | Kak Rizki - Kebaya (Indonesia) | Angi - Yapong Clothes (Betawi)

The energy was electric as each participant proudly showcased Indonesia’s rich cultural fashion on the runway!

Indonesian Traditional Dances!

After the fashion show, guests were treated to mesmerizing performances of traditional dances from around the world. IndoIdaho proudly presented two signature Indonesian performances: Jaranan Kepang and Yapong Dance. Jaranan Kepang Dancers: Daisy Hook, Alena Wiranata, Alexa Fleischer, Abbigail Fleischer, Charlie Snow.

Yapong Dancers: Maya Hill, Niken Strawn, Cecilia Mathes, Riski Chenowith, Anisa Pelangi, Melisa Glaves.

The rhythmic movements and colorful costumes captivated the audience, immersing them in the beauty of Indonesian performing arts.

Feasting & Festivities

What’s a celebration without delicious food? IndoIdaho brought a taste of Indonesia to the event with two signature treats:

�� Es Teler with Boba by Kak Rizki & Sharty Boba – a refreshing, tropical Indonesian dessert drink with a fun twist!

The guests indulged in a delightful dinner together, sharing laughter, stories, and appreciation for the diverse flavors on their plates.

Honoring Dedication & Closing the Night with Poco-Poco!

The event concluded with an awards ceremony, recognizing various communities for their incredible contributions and dedication. To wrap up the unforgettable evening, IndoIdaho led everyone in a lively Poco-Poco dance—a fun, easy-to-follow dance that got everyone on their feet!

Celebrating International Women's day 2025!

Every year on March 8, the world commemorates International Women's Day (IWD) as a tribute to the struggles of women in achieving equality. IWD has a strong historical foundation, originating from the women's labor movement in the United States and Europe in the early 20th century. In 1908, around 15,000 women marched in New York demanding voting rights, shorter working hours, and fair wages. This movement later inspired the International Socialist Women's Conference in 1910, which designated March 8 as a day to celebrate women's rights. Since then, IWD has become a global momentum for reflection, action, and celebration of women's achievements in various fields.

Differences Between International Women's Day and Women's Day in Indonesia

In Indonesia, a more commonly recognized celebration is Mother's Day, observed on December 22. Unlike IWD, which focuses on gender equality and women's rights globally, Mother's Day in Indonesia emphasizes honoring the role of mothers within families and society. The history of Mother's Day in Indonesia dates back to the first Indonesian Women's Congress in 1928, symbolizing the struggle of women in various aspects, including education and political rights. Meanwhile, IWD in Indonesia is still primarily celebrated within specific communities or organizations, focusing on women's empowerment and gender equality advocacy.

Women in the Indoidaho Community

In Boise, Idaho, there is an Indonesian diaspora community called Indoidaho, which is actively engaged in various cultural and social activities. Interestingly, this community is largely managed by women who serve as key administrators. They not only oversee events and community administration but also play a crucial role in preserving Indonesian culture in a foreign land.

Women in Indoidaho are instrumental in introducing Indonesian culture to the local community. They frequently perform traditional dances such as Yapong dance, Saman dance, Pendet dance at various community events and teach Jaranan Kepang dance to IndoIdaho kids. Additionally, they prepare Indonesian cuisine to share with their families and the community, ensuring that culinary heritage remains alive in the diaspora environment. This role reflects the spirit of women who not only safeguard cultural identity but also foster solidarity and togetherness in a foreign land.

Tanta.Inc and Its Role in Supporting Refugees in Boise

Beyond the diaspora community, Boise is also home to many refugees from different countries. One organization that plays a significant role in assisting refugees in their resettlement process is Tanta.Inc. This organization was established with the aim of supporting refugees through administrative assistance, skills training, and social and cultural support.

This year, Indoidaho will once again participate in an event organized by Tanta.Inc by performing Tari Yapong and Jaranan Kepang. This participation is not only a cultural celebration but also a symbol of solidarity between the diaspora community and refugees. Through art and culture, Indoidaho contributes to social integration efforts in Boise.

International Women's Day is not just a commemoration but also a moment to celebrate the roles and contributions of women in various aspects of life. Whether within the diaspora community or in humanitarian efforts, women continue to demonstrate that they are vital pillars in building an inclusive and empowered society. With the spirit of IWD, we can all continue to support and recognize the struggles and achievements of women worldwide.

Gianfiero Jorell Chaveli: The First Indonesian Basketball Student Manager at Vallivue High School

Gianfiero Jorell Chaveli, known as Joey, is the first Indonesian basketball manager to make his mark at Vallivue High School in the United States. Joey has defied expectations and proven that determination, skill, and passion can outshine any challenges coming his way.

A Journey Sparked by Opportunity

Joey's journey in American basketball began with a golden opportunity provided by Coach Mario Betancourt. Reflecting on his start, he shares, "Aku bisa di environment itu karena Coach Betancourt yang kasih opportunity untuk work for the team, and I know it's the beginning of a good journey sih." This chance not only allowed him to grow as a fellow student but also paved the way for unforgettable experiences in an entirely new environment.

Cultural Encounters and Identity

Being an international student comes with its fair share of challenges, and for Joey, one of the most interesting ones was introducing his American peers to Indonesia. "Pengalaman ketemu Americans itu definitely a unique experience. My friends are Hispanic and they don't know where Indonesia is; they thought it's a Filipino island. Same as my Coach Braden Riley, who thought Bali is a country! So I have to give a lot of explanation ke dia and my friends lmao."

Despite these cultural mix-ups, Joey embraced the opportunity to educate those around him about his homeland, strengthening his identity while forming close friendships along the way.

Unforgettable Moments on the Court

Among Joey's most cherished memories is the Classic of Damien Tournament 2023 in Los Angeles, a national-level event. "My favorite moment was definitely Classic Of Damien Tournament 2023 in Los Angeles, the National Tournament. We didn’t do good in LA, but we had fun." He also recalls the emotional experience of Senior Night, a bittersweet event marking his final game as the student manager senior. "Senior Night is my favorite too… it's emotional knowing it's my last game."

Joey’s contributions as a student manager to Vallivue’s basketball team were significant. One of the standout games was when Vallivue defeated Nampa 77-54, keeping their hopes alive in the District Tournament. The team also took part in the second annual Indonesian Night game on January 25, 2025, where Vallivue Varsity Basketball faced off against Caldwell. His final game as a senior basketball manager was an especially memorable moment, made even more special by the support from the IndoIdaho community.

A Shoutout to the Coaches

None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of his coaches. Joey is especially grateful for Coach Mario Betancourt, who gave him the opportunity to be part of the team and support the team as the student basketball manager. "Make sure to give him a shout out though, he deserves it!"

He also shares a strong bond with Coach Braden Riley, describing their relationship as that of best friends: "Me and Coach Riley are also best friends, we're like buddies." Joey also has a special nickname, "Indo" among his teammates and coaches!

Being Indonesian and a Basketball Student Manager at the same time is fantastic!

Joey's story is one of resilience and passion. He has paved the way for future Indonesian students who dream of making it in American high school basketball. If you are passionate enough about something that you love, there is always a way to make it happen! Though his high school journey is coming to an end, his story will remain an inspiration to many—both on and off the court. As he moves forward, one thing is certain: Gianfiero "Joey" Jorell Chaveli has left an indelible mark at Vallivue High School, and his journey is just beginning. He's pursuing his dream to become a sports broadcaster at Idaho State University. Best luck Joey!

Have you ever imagined yourself greeting locals in Jakarta, ordering delicious street food in Bali, or even understanding the lyrics of your favorite Indonesian songs? Well, our first Bahasa Indonesia class with IndoIdaho Community proved how fun and easy it is to learn this beautiful language—and now, you can be part of it too!

An Unforgettable First Class Experience

The energy in the room (both virtual and in-person) was electrifying. New faces, curious minds, and a shared excitement to explore a language that connects over 270 million people. From the very start, Kak Arin’s warm welcome set the tone for an engaging and laughter-filled session.

As we dove into the Introduction to Indonesian Culture & Language, Kak Angi and Mey captivated us with an insightful video showcasing Indonesia’s deep-rooted values of politeness and respect for elders. The “Aha!” moments were everywhere—participants quickly realized that Bahasa Indonesia is not just easy but also incredibly practical for travelers and culture enthusiasts alike.

When the video started, Mey explained her experiences as an Indonesian in learning English. She found that English is a little more tricky than Bahasa, because Bahasa has simple pronunciation and no conjugation, gender, or plural rules. And you will find magic in the video. You will understand Bahasa in only 2 minutes!

Learning Made Fun

Then came the real fun—interactive language practice with Kak Angi. Instead of dry grammar drills, we learned by speaking, laughing, and even acting out everyday scenarios. “Saya suka nasi goreng!” (I like fried rice!) was an instant favorite. Who knew asking for fried rice in Bahasa Indonesia could be this exciting?

To make things even more immersive, we watched Fahresy’s engaging video, highlighting how Indonesia’s vibrant culture is deeply intertwined with its language. Every phrase we learned felt like a step closer to experiencing Indonesia firsthand. Games, Laughs, and a Shared Passion

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Kak Arin’s interactive quiz brought out everyone’s competitive spirit. Questions on Indonesian culture and language had us thinking fast, laughing even faster, and, most importantly, bonding over our newfound knowledge.

The Q&A session was just as lively—participants asked about everything from Indonesian foods into a body part game named kepala pundak lutut kaki /head shoulder knee foot. It was incredible to see how learning a language naturally sparked an interest in the country’s diverse cultures and traditions. As the session wrapped up, we shared our biggest takeaways and, as a simple curiosity turned into a shared love for Indonesia—and the best part? This is just the beginning.

�� Yapong Dance – A lively and expressive performance that showcased Betawi heritage. The dancers' graceful yet upbeat moves, paired with traditional music, created an electrifying experience!

As if the celebration wasn’t exciting enough, IndoIdaho brought the house down at the Chinese Buffet Restaurant for the annual lunar year celebration together!

What’s a celebration without delicious food? IndoIdaho kicked off the festivities with a grand lunch at China Grand Buffet Restaurant. Families and friends gathered around steaming plates of their favorite dishes, chatting, laughing, and soaking up the festive atmosphere. The energy was contagious, and every bite was a taste of celebration! ��

One of the most exciting traditions of Lunar New Year? Angpao! �� The kids lined up with huge smiles, eagerly waiting to receive their red envelopes—a symbol of luck and prosperity. Their excitement was infectious, and seeing their happy faces made the moment even more special. It’s these little traditions that make the New Year feel so magical! ✨

From Jakarta to the Slopes: Kak Cecil’s Journey into the World of Skiing

Skiing is one of those experiences that many wouldn’t expect to embrace when growing up in a tropical, bustling city like Jakarta. The idea of gliding down snowy mountains feels worlds away when you live in a place where the sun blazes year-round. But for Kak Cecil, that changed the moment she moved to Alaska. The first time she witnessed snowfall, she knew—deep down—she was a winter person at heart.

Despite loving winter, skiing wasn’t something she had considered until about five years ago. It was her husband, who had been skiing since childhood, who challenged her and their kids to give it a try. What started as a simple challenge quickly turned into a family tradition. They signed up for lessons, learned the basics, and soon enough, everyone was hooked.

But let’s be honest—learning to ski as an adult is no easy feat. Imagine standing at the top of a hill, skis strapped to your feet, and attempting to slide down gracefully. Your mind races with instructions: “Chest down the mountain, press your shins against the tongue of the boots, lean forward, forward…” And then panic hits: “Oh no, I’m going too fast! How do I slow down again?!”

The struggle was real, but the determination was stronger. By their second winter season, after spending almost every weekend practicing, the whole family was skilled enough to tackle blue (intermediate) runs. That’s when the real fun began! The kids eagerly challenged themselves with little jumps and adventurous paths through the trees. Kak Cecil, however, preferred to stick to the trails—because, let’s be real, no one wants to risk broken bones as an adult!

Out of all the places they’ve skied, Bogus Basin remains their favorite. Just an hour away from downtown Boise, this local non-profit ski resort reinvests all its revenue back into improving the mountain for the community. It’s not just a place to ski—it’s a place that brings people together.

For Kak Cecil, skiing isn’t just about the sport; it’s about the quality time spent as a family. In a world where screens dominate our daily lives, escaping into nature, even for just a few hours, feels like a treasure. Watching her kids grow, sharing new adventures, and making memories in the snow—it all makes time slow down, if only for a little while.

And that’s the magic of skiing as a family.

For Kak Aulia, her first experience with winter sports wasn’t exactly love at first glide. She first tried skiing in 2018 during a trip to Montreal with her husband. He wanted to experience a winter sport, so they headed to Quebec and gave skiing a shot. But with a raging winter storm, temperatures plunging to -20°C, and ski boots that felt unbearably heavy, skiing did not make the best first impression.

Back home in Raleigh, North Carolina, everything changed when she watched the Winter Olympics. A teenage snowboarder, Chloe Kim, was making history with jaw-dropping tricks, and that’s when it hit her—women can snowboard too! Inspired by Chloe’s performance, she decided to give snowboarding a try.

In March 2018, Kak Aulia and her husband drove four hours to Wintergreen in Virginia for their first snowboarding lesson. This time, things felt completely different. The boots were comfortable, the weather was much kinder, and despite the inevitable falls and bruises, she actually enjoyed it! The thrill of snowboarding kept her coming back for more, and her husband fell in love with it even more than she did.

Their passion for snowboarding eventually led them to make a big decision—they moved to Boise, Idaho. Now, instead of a four-hour drive, they only need an hour to reach Bogus Basin, their new winter playground.

To improve her skills, Kak Aulia dedicated herself to practice, watching countless tutorial videos and investing in full safety gear to cushion the falls. Among the many ski resorts she has visited, Tamarack stands out as her favorite. With its wide, long trails and breathtaking mountain views, it’s the perfect spot for snowboarding adventures.

Of course, every snowboarder has their fair share of wipeouts, and Kak Aulia is no exception. One of her funniest moments happened when she misjudged the speed of a chair lift. She fell so hard getting off that she couldn’t sit properly for a month—yes, she even had to use a doughnut pillow to ease the pain!

Looking back, Kak Aulia is beyond grateful that she gave winter sports another chance. What started as a discouraging skiing experience has turned into a deep love for snowboarding. Now, hitting the slopes has become one of her favorite things to do!

After sharing Kak Cecil and Kak Aulia's exciting winter sport journeys, let's explore the magic of Bogus Basin, Idaho—a winter wonderland perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and environmental learning.

Nestled just 16 miles from Boise, Idaho, Bogus Basin has been a cherished winter destination since its establishment in 1942. As one of the nation's largest nonprofit ski areas, it offers 2,600 skiable acres and a plethora of activities for all ages.

Beyond recreation, Bogus Basin is dedicated to fostering environmental stewardship. The resort's SnowSchool program, now in its 20th year, introduces students from 3rd to 12th grade to snow science and winter ecology through hands-on snowshoe field trips. Serving up to 3,000 Treasure Valley students each winter, the program emphasizes the importance of understanding and preserving our natural world.

Kak Arin recently participated in in the snow shoe guided hike tour, facilitated by the Everwild Green Forest School at Bogus Basin, led by Josie Meyer, the Environmental Education Coordinator. During the snow shoe guided hike tour, Josie guided participants through the snowy terrain, sharing insights into the local ecosystem, snow science, and the significance of environmental conservation. This immersive experience not only deepened participants' appreciation for nature but also highlighted Bogus Basin's role in promoting environmental education.

As they moved through the silent, glistening forest, Josie introduced them to the hidden world beneath the snow. She explained the insulating properties of the snowpack, how small animals like snowshoe hares and voles tunnel underneath to survive the harsh winter, and how tree species adapt to the cold.

At one point, Josie demonstrated how to measure snow depth and analyze snow crystals—an essential skill in understanding avalanche risks and climate change impacts. Kak Arin was fascinated by how much the snow could tell about the environment. The trek wasn’t just about enjoying nature; it was a lesson in ecological balance and conservation.

By the end of the tour, Kak Arin felt a newfound appreciation for the winter ecosystem. Snowshoeing at Bogus Basin wasn’t just a fun outdoor activity; it was an immersive educational experience that deepened her connection to nature.

The Christmas season always brings a magical feeling, and last year, the IndoIdaho community embraced this spirit with a heartwarming celebration that will linger in everyone’s memories. Held in the welcoming space of a local church, the event brought families and friends together for a joyous day filled with music, laughter, and shared traditions. It opened with a solemn prayer on this special Christmas day. After that, we ready to live up the party!

The Magic of Music

The celebration began with a delightful musical performance by the talented children of IndoIdaho. Their passion and dedication were evident as they filled the room with the enchanting melodies of Christmas.

From the gentle harmonies of violins to the graceful notes of the piano and the lively sounds of the saxophone, each performance added a layer of warmth and festivity. These heartfelt renditions were more than just entertainment—they were gifts of joy that resonated with everyone in the audience, setting the perfect tone for the day.

A Feast to Remember

Of course, no IndoIdaho gathering is complete without delicious food, and this celebration was no exception. The event concluded with a delightful feast featuring traditional Indonesian dishes lovingly prepared by members of the community. The mouthwatering aromas of homemade meals filled the air as everyone gathered around to enjoy the culinary delights. Sharing this meal felt like sharing a piece of home, wrapping up the celebration with a sense of warmth and togetherness that perfectly embodied the holiday spirit.

Games That Sparked Joy

After the belly is filled, the fun continued with a lively mini-game involving cups. Participants paired up to see who could build the tallest and most stable cup tower. And Oreo on the Face game. It's fun to see silly faces everybody makes. The room buzzed with laughter, excitement, and a healthy dose of friendly competition. Teams cheered each other on, and the shared moments of triumph and hilarity brought everyone closer together. It was a simple yet meaningful way to connect and create cherished memories.

The Heart of the Celebration

What made this Christmas celebration truly special wasn’t just the music, the games, or even the food—it was the sense of connection and belonging that tied everything together. The event captured the essence of Christmas: love, joy, and community. The party closed by meeting Santa which brings everybody joy! Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is one of the most significant celebrations for Chinese communities worldwide. This festival, steeped in tradition, is marked by vibrant parades, family gatherings, and symbolic customs. While the core elements of Chinese New Year remain consistent across countries, local adaptations add unique dimensions to the festivities.

The Essence of Chinese New Year

Traditionally, Chinese New Year begins on a date that changes yearly, falling between January 21 and February 19, based on the lunar calendar. Each year is associated with one of 12 zodiac animals—rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The Chinese believe that individuals born under a particular zodiac sign inherit some of the associated animal’s traits.

Preparation for Chinese New Year involves thoroughly cleaning the house to sweep away bad luck from the past year and decorating with red lanterns, flowers, and other auspicious symbols. On New Year’s Eve, families gather for a feast featuring dishes like fish, rice, various meats, and vegetables—each carrying a symbolic meaning of prosperity and good fortune. Children receive “Lai See,” red envelopes filled with money, as a gesture of blessing for the year ahead.

The festival is not only celebrated in China but also in Chinatowns around the world, with grand parades featuring lion and dragon dances, vibrant costumes, and deafening fireworks to drive away evil spirits.

Lunar New Year in Indonesia and Beyond

In Indonesia, Chinese New Year, known as "Imlek," reflects the nation’s cultural diversity. It is officially recognized as a national holiday and celebrated with a harmonious blend of Chinese and local traditions. Events like the Grebeg Sudiro Festival in Surakarta highlight this cultural fusion, featuring a mix of traditional Chinese lion dances and elements of Javanese performance art.

For those outside Indonesia, there are still opportunities to experience this cultural collaboration. If you’re in Idaho, don’t miss the Lunar New Year 2025 Celebration organized by the Idaho Chinese Organization. Taking place on February 1st, 2025, at Boise JUMP, this event will feature Indo Idaho performing traditional Indonesian dances. It’s a chance to witness a unique blend of Indonesian and Chinese cultures during the festive season!

Indonesian Cultural Heritage Day

Indo Idaho proudly hosted Indonesian Cultural Heritage Day 2024 on Sunday, September 8th. This year’s event featured a vibrant showcase of Indonesian traditional dances, songs, popular pop music, delicious cuisine, and a traditional-style fashion show! With such a rich variety of Indonesian culture, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to share and celebrate with the diverse community here in Idaho, USA.

As a grant recipient of Art and History Annual Grant, we'd like to thank Boise City Department of Arts & History for their continuous support and also to all of our performers and everyone who helped make this event possible!

Here’s a recap of our fantastic day, and we hope to see you at our future events!

Pendet, The Greeting Balinese Dance

At 11 AM, our event began with a traditional Balinese dance called the Pendet Dance. Also known as the floral offering dance, Pendet is traditionally performed to purify a temple or theater as a prelude to ceremonies. Typically performed by young girls, the dancers carry bowls of flower petals, tossing them into the air throughout the performance. It is considered a welcoming dance, inviting good spirits and greeting the audience.

Fun fact: Pendet is one of the oldest Balinese dances!

Indonesia Raya With Opening Speech

From The Consulate General San Francisco's Representative

To kick off the event, all of our guests were invited to stand and join in singing the Indonesian National Anthem, "Indonesia Raya." Mrs. Nova Maulani, Consul of Protocol and Consular Affairs from the Consulate General of Indonesia in San Francisco, then delivered a brief speech about Indonesia and its rich cultural heritage—a perfect way to officially begin the event!

Angklung and Gambang Performence

So, what is Angklung?

Angklung is a traditional Sundanese instrument made of bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. On Sunday, Angklung was played in harmony with a saxophone and a Gambang, a xylophone-like instrument made from straight-grained hardwood that is widely used in Indonesia. The combination of Angklung, Gambang, and saxophone created a unique and harmonious sound.

The ensemble performed two songs. The first was "Tanah Air Ku" ("My Homeland"), written by Saridjah Niung, also known as Ibu Sud. This song is popular in Indonesia, often performed during independence celebrations and ceremonies.

The second song, "Manuk Dadali," is a Sundanese song that uses the metaphor of a strong and graceful bird to represent Indonesia. Written in the Sundanese language, it is one of the most beloved traditional songs in the country.

Our performers were dressed in Saman dance costumes, and after this musical performance, they will keep the energy going by dancing the day away!

Saman Dance,
The Dance of a Thousand Hands

After the opening remark, we continued to celebrate our traditional cultures through dancing! Starting from the Aceh Province; the province located in northern part of Sumatra Island.

Saman Dance or also known as "The Dance of a Thousand Hands" is one of the most popular traditional dances in Indonesia. Saman is officially recognized by UNESCO in 2011 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding . It is also named as the best ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) cultural preservation at the 25th ASEANTA (The ASEAN Tourism Association) Awards for Excellence in 2012.

Fun fact, this dance was also performed at the ASEAN Games opening ceremony in 2018.

Jaranan Kepang Dance,
The Flat Horses

The Jaranan Kepang dance, also widely known as "Kuda Lumping," is a traditional performance from Ponorogo, East Java, Indonesia, portraying a group of horsemen. In English, "Jaranan Kepang" means "Flat horses." This dance is deeply rooted in Javanese culture.

The Jaranan Kepang made its debut performance on Sunday, and they did an amazing job. We’d love to see more of this performance, wouldn’t you agree?

Yapong Dance

Yapong dance is a dance originated from the Betawi people. Betawi are a group of people that originate in Jakarta, Indonesia. This dance depicts the association of young people created by the artist Bagong Kussudiardja. The Yapong dance was performed for the first time to celebrate Jakarta's 450th anniversary event in 1977.

With the bright colorful costumes, energetic moves and song, this dance truly lightens the mood!

Badminton Tournament Winner Announcement

On Saturday, September 7th, 2024, Indo Idaho hosted its third annual badminton tournament.

The tournament featured participants from the Treasure Valley community, all united by their shared love for badminton, one of the most popular sports in Indonesia and many other Asian and European countries.

Dandi's Solo Music Performance

Dandi played two of Indonesia's hit pop songs by the legendary musician Chrisye on the saxophone.

Chrisye was an iconic Indonesian progressive pop singer and songwriter.

In 2011, Rolling Stone Indonesia ranked him as the third-greatest Indonesian musician of all time.

It was an amazing time, with everyone singing along together!

Indonesian Traditional Outfit Showcase/Fashion Show

We had many adorable models! From Sabang to Merauke, we had young kids wear and presenting their traditional attire.

Merak Dance,
The Sundanese Peacock Dance

The Merak Dance, or Tari Merak, also known as the Peacock Dance, originates from West Java. Performed by female dancers, it draws inspiration from the graceful movements of a peacock, with its feathers and wings seamlessly blending with the classical elements of Sundanese dance. This modern creation was choreographed by Sundanese artist Raden Tjeje Soemantri in the 1950s.

The dance is typically performed to welcome distinguished guests at major events and is also popular at Sundanese wedding ceremonies. Interestingly, it is one of the most frequently performed Indonesian dances outside of Indonesia—and we’re thrilled to be part of that tradition!

Tumpeng Cutting Ceremony

Tumpeng is a traditional Indonesian dish originating from Javanese cuisine, featuring cone-shaped rice accompanied by side dishes of vegetables and meat. Traditionally served during the slametan (gratitude) ceremony, the rice is shaped using a cone-shaped woven bamboo mold. It can be plain steamed rice, uduk rice (cooked with coconut milk), or yellow rice colored with turmeric.

Tumpeng symbolizes gratitude and is typically served during significant celebrations. According to Javanese and Balinese folklore, the cone-shaped rice represents life and the glory of God as the creator of nature, while the side dishes and vegetables symbolize the balance and harmony of life. Spinach, often included, represents prosperity in traditional Javanese agricultural society.

In the gratitude ceremony, after the people pray, the top of tumpeng is cut and delivered to the most important person first.

We are thrilled to share this meaningful tradition with many of our guests!

Lunch & Games

We had an incredible array of mouth-watering Indonesian dishes on Sunday! A big thank you to all the guests who prepared and shared their best recipes!

From Pentol (meatball soup), Nasi Kuning (yellow rice cooked with coconut and turmeric), Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Mie Goreng (fried noodles), Sambal (chili paste with a blend of exotic herbs and spices), and Makaroni Schotel (a Dutch-influenced pasta casserole with vegetables and meat), to delicious traditional sweets like Kue Pandan (steamed cake made with pandan paste)—there was something for everyone to enjoy.

After lunch, we played some traditional games, including one where participants transferred the Indonesian flag from one cup to another!

Indo Idaho Inc's Badminton Tournament is part of Indonesian Cultural and Heritage Day celebration, a festival celebrating the diverse culture Indonesia has to offer, including music, cuisine, and sport/games played by Indonesian during the Independence Day celebration.

The Badminton Tournament will be held on:

Saturday, September 7, 2024 – Qualification Round starting at 12.30 pm

Sunday, September 8, 2024 – Semi Final and Final Round starting at 10 am (if applicable)

at Fort Boise Community Center,

700 N Robbins Rd, Boise, ID 83702-4541.

The Badminton Tournament competition is for men and women doubles (mixed doubles would be entered in the men doubles category) with the maximum number of 32 participants or 16 pairs.

Registration fee is $10/person (non-refundable) and each participant is required to register.

Scoring system:

Best 2 out 3 with 21 points per game, with dues up to 25.

Competition System:

4 Groups (A, B, C, D) with 4 pairs per group randomly drawn. Best 2 out of each group will advance to elimination round.

If there is a tie in a group, the team with the least losing sets will advance. If a tie remains at this point, the team with the most winning points will advance. Every point matters
